Healing Our Island District Liaisons are available
to help as community grant coaches and
collaboration experts. They help applicants and
grantees sort through grant paperwork and
reporting requirements. District Liaisons may check
in with project coordinators or planners to monitor
project and reporting progress and attend
Healing Our Island funded events.

District Liaisons cannot guarantee an applicant?s success.
In the event that the Review Committee declines your
application, your District Liaison can work with you to try
again.

The Hawai`i County Resource Center (HCRC) in the
Department of Research and Development administers funds
received through a State Grant-in-Aid to fund anti-drug
initiatives for Hawai`i County?s grassroots, community-based
groups who traditionally have no access to grant funding.
Community Building is an integral component of the Healing
Our Island program.
We support collaborative grassroots efforts that provide
drug-free lifestyle education and substance-abuse prevention
measures for community members of all ages. Our goal is to
keep Hawai`i Island a healthy and safe place for our
children and our families.
Managers and tenants of an apartment complex received a HOI
grant to celebrate the turnaround and a ?new beginning of a once
drug-infested complex?. At this event, a DARE officer hands out
literature to raise awareness of staying drug-free and making wise
choices (article by Bret Yager, Hawai`i Tribune-Herald staff writer).
Eligible Applicants: Any grassroots group in Hawai`i
County serving Hawai`i County residents. Partnerships
with established nonprofit organizations is encouraged,
however the lead should come from the grassroots.
Preference is given to first-time applicants.
Ineligible Applicants: Applications will not be accepted
from groups located outside of Hawai`i County and/or
serving populations located outside of Hawai`i County;
and Department of Education Administration. We
encourage Hawai`i County-based schools to collaborate
in Healing Our Island funded projects, but school
administration cannot be the lead applicants and cannot
receive the award.

Prevention Strategies

?
Applicants will contact their District Liaison at the
beginning of their planning processes.
?
Grant applications will clearly state how their
proposed projects address the drug prevention
strategies they identified in their applications.
?
All Grantees will complete a final report within 30
days of the end of their projects.
?
Grantees will return any unused funds to the County.
?
Grantees and their communities will have fun working
together. Innovative collaboration and resource
sharing is one of the best ways to keep Hawai`i
Island communities safe and healthy.

substance abuse prevention must encompass
families and whole communities, not just youth and
not just individuals considered to be at high risk.?
